چکیده

Fluid lipid bilayers are composed of two mono-molecular sheets held together by weak van der Waals forces. Except for viscous resistance, the monolayers are free to slide relative to one another giving rise to a "hidden" degree of freedom within the composite structure.

Dynamics of shape fluctuations of quasi-spherical vesicles revisited.

In this paper, the dynamics of spontaneous shape fluctuations of a single, giant quasi-spherical vesicle formed from a single lipid species is revisited theoretically. A coherent physical theory for the dynamics is developed based on a number of fundamental principles and considerations, and a systematic formulation of the theory is also established. From the systematic theoretical formulation,...

On Shape Transformations and Shape Fluctuations of Cellular Compartments and Vesicles

We discuss the shape formation and shape transitions of simple bilayer vesicles in context with their role in biology. In the first part several classes of shape changes of vesicles of one lipid component are described and it is shown that these can be explained in terms of the bending energy concept in particular augmented by the bilayer coupling hypothesis. In the second part shape changes an...

Bending stiffness of biological membranes: what can be measured by neutron spin echo?

Large vesicles obtained by the extrusion method represent adequate membrane models to probe membrane dynamics with neutron radiation. Particularly, the shape fluctuations around the spherical average topology can be recorded by neutron spin echo (NSE). In this paper we report on the applicable theories describing the scattering contributions from bending-dominated shape fluctuations in diluted ...

Molecular dynamics simulation of the formation, structure, and dynamics of small phospholipid vesicles.

Here, we use coarse grained molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to study the spontaneous aggregation of dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) lipids into small unilamellar vesicles. We show that the aggregation process occurs on a nanosecond time scale, with bicelles and cuplike vesicles formed at intermediate stages. Formation of hemifused vesicles is also observed at higher lipid concentratio...

Fluid membranes in hydrodynamic flow fields: Formalism and an application to fluctuating quasi-spherical vesicles in shear flow

The dynamics of a single fluid bilayer membrane in an external hydrodynamic flow field is considered. The deterministic equation of motion for the configuration is derived taking into account both viscous dissipation in the surrounding liquid and local incompressibility of the membrane. For quasispherical vesicles in shear flow, thermal fluctuations can be incorporated in a Langevin-type equati...
